The importance of protective hairstyles.
Hello Afro Family! I am back with another informative blog. I have really missed writing to you . This past week I uploaded the video above. In this blog I will be focusing on why protective hairstyles are important and what they can do for your hair when properly done and taken care of.
A protective hairstlye is a hairstyle that tucks away the ends, keeping your ends from tugging, pulling and manipulation. There are two types of protective hairstyles. Short term protective hairstyles and a long term ones. Short term protective hairsyles include: two or three stand twists, braids(these are done with no extensions), buns, bantu knots, conrows , flattwist and wigs. Long term protective hairstyles include braids, twists and conrows with added hair. Nowadays there are a lot crochet hairstyles that do not need minimum work to install. The difference between long term and short term protective hairstyles is the length in which the style will last on the head. Short term protective styles get frizzy easily and you can still pull on the hair, like I always do especially with the ends. Long term protective hairstyles you do not give you the freedom to manupulate your hair.
A few weeks ago I realised I was tired of my hair and I needed to let it breathe. I did not put it away in any way, so I let out my afro for a whole week. Wash day came and I lost so much hair because my 4C high porosity hair tangles a lot. The point is I do not loose that much hair when my hair is twists or other styles. I really needed a break and it was the perfect time to do braids because they gave me a break that did not leave my hair tangled. I have cut my hair every year for a very long time because by the end of the year I was bored with my hair. I also like colour so adding hair to my natural hair for braiding keeps me from chemically dying my hair.
There is a thing such as over protecting when it comes to long term protective hairstyles. Overprotecting looks exactly like the picture above! The hair is dry and the edges are thin and the hairpiece is very old. These styles are not meant to become your new hair so leaving them too long will cause breakage, tangling and dryness. Over protecting can also happen when you remove one long term protective hairstyle just to do another one. I know that all too well, last year I braided my hair every month for a year and I lost ALL my hairline and MOST of my hair. I was not giving my hair the chance to grow on its own, it was on "hairpiece life support". I understand we are busy people but we have to give our hair time to if we want it to grow.
In conclusion. hair grows when its left alone but do not leave it alone for too long. The safest way to protect your hair is with crochets because they do not put any tension on your hair or scalp. They are also easy to take off, I do not know how many times I have cut my hair while removing my braids (I did that recently too). Watch the video above on tips about how to take care of your hair before and after doing a long term protective hairstyles.
