Moisture lessons
Hello Afro family! Welcome to my blog! Today we will be talking about how to properly moisturize your hair according to its porosity. I will also be discussing some moisture myths. Many errors are made when moisturizing hair. I'm very happy to be sharing this information with you!
Definition:
The process of hydrating and sealing the hair to prevent dryness. The oxford dictionary defines moisture as tiny drops of water making something damp. It also defines moisturizing as making the skin less dry. I added the word sealing in my definition which will be explained later in this blog.
Myths:
1. Your hair needs a moisturizing lotion to be moisturized.
2. Your hair is well moisturized if it's shiny.
3. Natural hair needs oil to be moisturized.
4. Hair can only be moisturized properly on wash day.
5. Natural hair is always dry no matter how much you moisturize it.
The correct way to moisture hair:
1. L.C.O method: Liquid, cream, and oil.
2. L.O.C method: Liquid, oil, and cream.
Liquid gives the hair moisture, you can use water in a spray bottle to dampen the hair or you can use a water-based spray. The first ingredient should be water.
A cream is necessary to give the hair the nutrients it needs in between washes. It helps prevent breakage and is often written cream. A curling cream is not meant to moisturize the hair, it works like a gel so it's meant to style the hair. A curling or twisting cream will often leave your hair feeling hard because it's meant to hold your hair in a certain style. So use a moisturizing cream, no shortcuts!
Oil is meant to seal the hair once the hair has been properly moisturized. Some oils are moisturizing oils, some are sealing oils. Frankly, you can use any oil to seal your hair as long as it's not too thick or too thin for your hair porosity.
Things to consider if you have low porosity:
The L.O.C and L.C.O methods work extremely well for high porosity hair but may overwhelm the hair shaft that is low in porosity. Most low porosity naturals just use. L.C or L.O methods. The low porosity hair shaft closes its cuticles at step two most of the time. Depending on how pores your hair is. To prevent product build-up, just add the use of oil and water because the cream may just sit on top of the hair.
How to retain the moisture :
It's very easy to lose all that moisture through the night. The best way to retain the moisture is to put on a silk bonnet or a silk scarf. The silk material locks moisture in instead of absorbing the moisture like the cotton material. A silk or satin pillowcase can also help retain the moisture.
