OILY SCALP

Hey Afro family! Today we are going to be talking about the scalp. This topic was inspired by a number of subscribers. They have asked regarding the health of the scalp and how to take care of it when it's dry or too oily. I will be focusing on oily scalp this week and I will discuss dry scalp next week.

The scalp lies in between the hair follicle and the hair shaft. This is the most sensitive part of our head because it collects everything from the dust in the air to the products we use on our heads. It's very important to keep the scalp clean so it does not get infected. The scalp produces its own natural oil, which is sebum. This oil is produced by your sebaceous gland.

Have e you ever heard that you should not grease or oil your scalp? If you have oily scalp you already suffer from too much sebum so oiling or greasing it may cause scalp diseases which I will cover later in this blog post. Treat oily scalp differently from dry scalp.

The same sebum that lies on your scalp is supposed to slide down to your hair to keep it moisturized. It's ideal for people with straight hair but not for people with textured hair because of the curls or coils. So we need assistance with products or methods like inversion to take the sebum down to our hair. This is the healthiest oil for our hair and scalp. It protects the scalp from bacterial infections by forming a barrier to keep harmful diseases from coming in.
Too much sebum?
Too much of this natural oil can cause problems. The oil can make your hair look greasy, cause scalp, and hair damage. This can also cause dandruff. Dandruff is a skin condition that mainly affects the scalp. A severe case of dandruff can evolve into seborrheic dermatitis. Some of the symptoms may include dandruff on your scalp, hair eyebrows, or beard. Inflammation and itching will also occur. Symptoms are more severe when it is winter and when you are stressed.

That is it for today Afro family. I will be discussing dandruff on my YouTube channel.  The video will be out later today. Let me know if this post was helpful.

  2. I have always associated the itch on my scalp to dry scalp. How does one know the type of scalp they have?

  3. you can take a tissue and place it on your scalp to see whether oil is absorbed out or not.
