Today we are going to be talking about Protein. In my previous video, I said that our conditioning needs to be balanced between moisture and protein treatments. In my wash day blog post I also showed you my two regimens. Only using  moisturizing conditioners will cause hygral fatigue which I have recently experienced. I neglected my protein treatments while my hair was in braids, now I am paying the price.

Why is protein important for our hair?

The hair on your head is made of 88 to 90% protein. Orally consuming protein and using protein treatments and products that have protein increases the strength of your hair strands. When used in products or DIY treatments, protein covers the hair stand and protects it from breakage. It also increases the elasticity of your hair strands. It gives the hair much-needed volume. It increases hair growth, rapidly!

Protein deficiency

If you do not use protein all together for a period of time, you will experience hair loss. Your hair will very dry even though you are using moisturizing products. Your hair will become thin and it will be hard for your hair to hold certain molds. The hair will also begin to look discolored.

What to do if you are experiencing protein deficiency?

The first thing you need to do is a protein treatment. You can use DIY treatments with the following ingredients :

Eggs, mayonnaise, plain yogurt, avocados. You can mix them with essential oil and a career oil.

If you want to skip the blender and the mess it's best to use a store-bought treatment like this one :

Africas best hair mayonnaise

I love this treatment because it's got just the right amount of protein and that's another reason why I prefer store-bought treatments over DIY treatments. Using too much protein can lead to protein overload. There are many other products like this one, you do not need to use this specific brand. This however is my favorite.

Protein ingredients.

If you are experiencing protein deficiency you can look for the following ingredients in your products to bring back the protein that your hair lacks :

Protein overload:
Too much of a good thing will definitely kill your hair strands. You can easily experience protein overload if you only use protein treatments. Your hair needs a balance of both protein and moisture treatments. I alternate between a protein and a moisture treatment every week. I also have a protein leave-in conditioner and a moisturizing leave-in conditioner. The amount of protein I use is good for my hair because of my high porosity but if you have low porosity you have to use less protein in your hair. Once a month might work for you or less depending on how often you wash your hair. I wash mine every week.
This weekend I will be doing a video on protein overload. Be sure to check it out! That's all from me for today afro family. Do not forget to Subscribe to my blog for the more helpful content. Have a wonderful week ❤️.
